Going Coastal understands the inseparable connection between pristine waters and a flourishing boating enterprise. Our initiative drives change by enlightening marinas and boaters about reducing pollution in everyday operations through eco-friendly practices.
Going Coastal’s Green Edges, Clean Blueways campaign is a multi-faceted drive to raise awareness and action. This initiative delivers personalized, print, and online communications targeting marina operators and boaters across New York City. Green practices improve service to boaters, can save money and help marinas stay ahead of regulations. Going Coastal Clean Marina Outreach assists marina operators in identifying and implementing pollution prevention services for boaters. Clean water is essential for good boating and is good for business.
Our initiative fostered a deep understanding of “green” practices among marina operators and boaters. By building capacity, we empowered them with tools centered on recycling, oil pollution control, maintenance best practices, and local resources. This newfound awareness bolsters the commitment of marinas and boaters to practical solutions and unites them as a community for conservation.
Clean Boating Starts at the Marina
From shrink wrap recovery to recycling spent motor oil and installing a pumpout to managing stormwater runoff, marinas took the lead in advocating pollution prevention. Twenty marina audit participants embraced their roles as environmental stewards, triggering remarkable shifts in their attitudes and actions. This initiative spurred the implementation of strategies to eliminate or minimize pollutants from normal operations. Operators are now championing green infrastructure reflecting their dedication to life-long conservation. The positive effects extended to boaters, whose knowledge grew when their marinas adopted “green” practices. The project engaged “Dock-walkers” who met with local boaters engaging 131 boaters to complete pollution prevention questionnaires and take the Clean Boater Pledge.
