Nassau County, Long Island
Community Collaboration and Inclusive Planning
Going Coastal was at the forefront of this initiative orchestrating the planning, mapping, branding, development, and marketing of the South Shore Blueway Trail in partnership with Cameron Engineering. This comprehensive project spans the entirety of Nassau County’s south shore, opening up a world of exploration and adventure for all. The team worked to ensure that every aspect of the Blueway aligns with the values of conservation, recreation, and accessibility.
A true testament to the power of collaboration, the South Shore Blueway Trail was developed through an inclusive planning process. We brought together the voices of over 1,000 residents and collaborated closely with local communities. The result? The comprehensive South Shore Blueway Plan – a visionary document that paved the way for a water route specifically designed for small non-motorized boats like kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.
Bridging Gaps and Creating Opportunities
The South Shore Blueway Trail is a blueprint for communities to conserve precious habitats while simultaneously offering avenues for active and responsible recreation. By aligning public and private resources, the trail ensures that people of all ages and abilities can access and appreciate the Long Island waterways.
The project identified 22 strategic water access points, pinpointing gaps in trail accessibility and opportunities for enhancement, making waterways more accessible. Seven brand-new launch sites were designed by Cameron Engineering to complete the trail. The sites are not just points of entry; they’re gateways to unforgettable experiences and connections with nature that will leave a lasting impact.
impassioning Sustainability Through Community: Friends of the South Shore Blueway
Going Coastal recognized the importance of long-term sustainability and community involvement in preserving this invaluable resource and took the initiative to facilitate the founding of the Friends of the South Shore Blueway advocacy organization. This collaborative endeavor brings together passionate individuals, local stakeholders, and dedicated enthusiasts who share a common goal – ensuring the continued vitality and accessibility of the trail. The Friends of the South Shore Blueway organization acts as a pillar of support, fostering a sense of stewardship among the communities that embrace the trail.
Augmenting History to Unveil the Past

At Going Coastal, we believe that a trail isn’t just about the present; it’s a tapestry woven with the threads of the past.
